Chris Carr Convention

Excerpts from My Speech to the GAGOP Convention

June 27, 2017

It was an honor to address our party’s leaders, delegates, and elected officials at the GOP convention in Augusta. I’m proud to share these excerpts from my speech to the 2017 Georgia GOP convention:

“It was a true honor to be able to formally kickoff my campaign for the office I was appointed to by Governor Deal at this year’s GOP Convention in Augusta. These past eight months as the state’s top legal officer, I along with a dedicated and talented team in the Attorney General’s office, have assumed the mantle left by the distinguished public servant Sam Olens and continued to do great work for the citizens of Georgia.

“I wanted to take a moment to highlight the principles that guide me as your Attorney General and my priorities for the future of our state. First and foremost is my duty to uphold and defend your rights and liberties under both the U.S. and Georgia Constitutions. The rule of law is a cornerstone of our society, along with free enterprise and the knowledge that every state can be it’s own laboratory of freedom and opportunity. Under our federalist system, America is the freest and most prosperous nation on Earth. But these principles came under assault in 2008, and we are still feeling the effects today.

“I will continue to battle the federal government’s overreach where ever it occurs. Whether it is the onerous regulations placed on businesses, large and small alike, that kill jobs and lower productivity for no real gains, or the intrusive rules governing the “Waters of the U.S.” Act, you can count on me to defend your personal freedoms and property rights. My time at the Georgia Department of Economic Development gave me first-hand experience in what does, and does not, work when it comes to regulations and creating economic growth on the state level.

“The free exercise of religion will be protected while I am Georgia’s Attorney General, along with your right to keep and bear arms. My office’s job is to punish those who break our laws, not to persecute the law abiding.

“Now that you know some of the principles that guide me, let me tell you about some of my priorities beyond defending your rights. An open and transparent government is crucial to maintaining our free and vibrant republic. My office will do all we can to uphold the laws and standards of open government. We will work with both the law enforcement and medical professionals in the state to battle the opioid epidemic that is affecting Georgia families no matter their race or economic status.

“Protecting the most vulnerable is a charge I take to heart. That is why our office has set out to combat the modern-day slavery that is human trafficking and already helped to pass legislation to stiffen penalties on traffickers and help victims of this horrible crime. Our office has also taken the lead in prosecuting elder abuse cases that range from physical abuse to theft and fraud. And you can count on me to fight to protect and preserve life at any stage.

“Thank you for taking the time find out how I will continue to fight for you, and I look forward to earning your vote next fall.”
